Kindergarten 1

Term Overview

Term 1: our friends!

The theme for term 1 was 'About Me'. For the K1s, the children embarked on a discussion about their friends in class! To start, we read the book My Friend Rabbit by Eric Rohmann. Afterwards, we had a discussion where we talked about other activities we can do with our friends, that Rabbit did not do with his! This discussion allowed the children in appreciating their friends more after the lesson.

The theme for term 2 was 'Living Things”'. In class, the children discussed the different parts of their body and described their different hairstyles. Some boys had said they have hair behind their ears, and some girls said they had their hair nearing their ankles! The children's imagination on their dream hairstyle or how they wanted to represent their hair however they wanted, ran wild. After they represented their own hairstyle, Teacher Natalia requested to see how their parent or grandparent's hairstyle looked like. These were their masterpieces.

Term 2: My self!

The theme for term 3 was 'The Environment around Us'. For this topic, the K1s had a discussion Teacher Natalia on how we can each play our part in conserving the environment. We discussed on how every little part we play contributes to the conservation of our environment!

Term 3: conserving our environment!

Lesson Overview

Lesson overview

We explored the ways in which we could conserve the environment through the different transportation modes we use or observe in our daily lives.

After the discussion where the children demonstrated their problem-solving skills, the children were tasked to do a collage using recycled magazines and coloured paper to further reinforce the concept of conservation for the environment.

Here are the children's responses and participation during the lesson.

Alphabet Cubes

Lesson objectives

Pencil
  1. Children will create lines in their artwork.

  2. Children will make different shapes in their artwork.

  3. Children will create 3 dimensions in their artwork.

  4. Children will create artwork from a variety of media (from recycled papers).

  5. Children will show the different modes of transportation (bus, car, trains, bicycle etc) in their artwork.

problem-solving

According to MacNaughton & Williams (2009), "Problem-solving skills are the foundation of all areas of knowledge including mathematics, the sciences, and the arts. it is through learning to problem-solve that children build their intellectual skills in these areas.".

In this video, Teacher Natalia demonstrates problem-solving techniques with the children by discussing the different transportation vehicles that are better for the environment.

The children were given ample time and space to think of their answers by themselves without interruption from Teacher Natalia.

Moving on to the main activity of the lesson, the children were tasked to create their own collage using recycled magazine and coloured papers to paste on their transportation templates, as seen in these photographs.

documentation

According to Seitz (2008), "When expected to provide evidence that children are meeting learning standards, documentation is a natural way to make learning visible.".

During the activity, Teacher Natalia can be seen documenting the process whereby the children were completing their artwork. This is captured in the video.

Teacher Natalia has documented the process so as to track the children's progress as well as the children's progress in the classroom for portfolio and display purposes.
